Powder in La Grave

The snow finally arrived in the abundance this week, with up to a metre of fresh falling in the Vallons de la Meije at La Grave this Friday. After the thinnest start to the season for 20 years, we were having to travel more than normal for a week of off piste skiing at La Grave – but despite the thin conditions we managed a day tour in the Queyras with skills training en route, found some good snow in Les Deux Alpes and were rewarded with 2 great powder days in La Grave itself.  The final day in particular was an unexpected gem; standing in the rain at the lift station, Pierre’s radio finally crackled to life as the team on the mountain announced fresh snow, limited visibility, but far less wind than expected. ‘C’est Ouvert’ he declared – I couldn’t believe our luck!
