Ski Adventure on the Aletschhorn

Just back from a few days of adventure and solitude with Nick up at the Mittelaletsch bivi hut, trying to ski the Aletschhorn.  Unfortunately, far more snow fell in the Oberland than forecast, so we didn’t make it all the way to the summit (though I’m now well trained for the summer – wading through tons of fresh snow putting a track back in along the arête!)

Fresh snow means fresh turns however, so we made the most of some great late season powder.  The ski out down the Aletsch Glacier also proved to be an adventure – I’ve never done as much skiing on bare ice before – before the final ‘million degrees’ skin up over the ridge to Betmeralp.  You know it’s going to be hot when all the wax melts on your bases and you have to put the skis back in the snow again to cool down before putting skins on…
