This Ortler Alps Ski Tour is a new addition to our program for 2014, so it was great to explore a new area. The Ortler Alps lie in South Tirol in the German speaking part of Northern Italy. It’s rather a difficult place to reach, so we met up in Switzerland and drove across to our start point at the resort of Sulden, riding up through the lift system before skiing down a long decent and steady climb up to the Marteller Hut. Like all huts in the region, this was a comfortable affair, with good food and an amazing desert finishing off the meal.
Next we headed west to the Branca Hut for 2 nights, touring on the north facing glacier system opposite the hut – where we found plenty of powder, before a boiling hot skin up to the excellent Pizzini Hut. Incredibly, this hut boasts a working sauna if you fancy easing off the aches and pains after a few days on the hill. We passed on that one, but went in search of more good powder in the back bowls just north of the hut, before finally climbing Cevedale on the last day of the tour en route to a huge descent back down to Sulden to finish off the week. In summary – great huts, great scenery and great company – so you couldn’t really ask for more!
