The powder continues to fall – another very snowy week, this time Off Piste Skiing in the Haute Maurienne Valley. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in this less well known corner of the Alps over the years, but this was my first work trip to the area and it fulfilled all expectations as a super quiet freeride area. The whole week we only met one other guide off piste skiing at Val Cenis. This was such an unusual occurrence, that he skied across to shake my hand in the woods and greeted us warmly for a chat – you don’t get that happening on the Vallee Blanche!
As for the skiing, well it was powder all week – loads of excellent tree skiing in the resorts with hardly anyone else off piste and lovely day tours around the valley. Our accommodation was a cosy gite in a picture postcard hamlet high on the edge of the Vanoise National Park. A perfect spot for enjoying nature after a good days skiing – with Chamois spotting out of the window and a pair of nesting Lammergeiers frequently seen overhead.
