The big story so far this season is the exceptional amounts of snow around, following a very wet spring.
Everything is properly plastered and a lot of extreme skiing has been going on lately – the North Face of the Tour Ronde was skied last week, as was the Contamine-Mazeaud(!) on MB de Tacul over the weekend.
Alpine Ice and Mixed climbing conditions have needless to say been excellent. It’s now heating up though, with a pattern of afternoon storms this week – so we’ll have to see how things continue to pan out. A few ice routes seeing traffic recently include: MB de Tacul – just about everything on the N Face Triangle is in great nick, Tour Ronde, N Face, Gervasutti Couloir, Col Freshfield all in good nick, Frontier Ridge on Mt Maudit is seeing ascents, Vogler Couloir off the Cosmiques Arete is seeing traffic etc
On the alpine rock climbing front, plenty of traffic on the S Face of the Midi and climbs around the E Face of MB de Tacul. Approaches to routes in the Chamonix Aiguilles and Aiguilles Rouges still remain very snowy, so you need to take an axe and a pair of boots to places where you might normally get by with approach shoes.
