Trace de Vaugel ’07

Stepping out of the funicular into the rain on a Sunday morning, things didn’t look too promising – but by the end of the race briefing it had at least turned to snow! The course had to be changed this year to nearby Les Arcs, due to the early season snow conditions – but both the team and individual races were still running.

I was entered in the individual race: the first climb being interupted with 5 mins of running where the snow cover was a little thin before we really got into the skinning.  Being my first race of the season, this was the usual lung busting 40 minutes of hell before a section on foot and a short descent.  The second climb had large sections on foot to reach a col, before heading off down a red run in the resort into the gathering snow.  This didn’t last for long however, as we rapidly turned off down a steep, iron hard bump field.  Thighs screaming after 100yds, it was a long descent – thoughfully topped off with a mile of skating along a bumby track to the final climb.

Luckily this was quite short, with a full tuck straight down to the finish.  I’d done OK, coming in 12th, so got the full kit check routine.  Not a bad start to the season + a good effort by the organisers to keep things running given the lack of snow in much of the alps.
